The value of sincere prayer when you have mental illness

Mental illness puts an end to any certainty we might have about how our life will go. When we are uncertain, there are few parameters to fall back upon. With severe illness, everything becomes unpredictable and life can be difficult. During times like these, prayer can be healing and comforting. It is not necessary to adhere to any specific ideology for engaging in heartfelt prayer.

However if our prayers seek to benefit more than just ourselves, we can in spirit help all those who have pain and suffering. With prayer of this kind, we can extend beyond our own suffering. In doing so, we learn that we can have refuge and that we can benefit others despite our difficulties. Knowing that during prayer, we can look beyond mental illness helps immensely in heading towards a life unrestricted by illness.

Prayer is a reaching with heart and spirit. It is not limited by time or space and can encompass all of existence. Despite our limitedness, with prayer, we can reach the source of everything and touch all beings. During difficult times, when there is a lot of change and distress, we can be absolutely certain that there is connection, and harmony.

Often, we might find that amidst everything that is painful, we can rely on prayer to help soothe and center. Depending on our circumstances and our feelings about it, we could choose to pray regularly or intermittently. What matters is how sincerely we engage in it. The more heartfelt our prayer is, the more the impact. Perhaps it might be important to remember that prayer is different from our other activities. With prayer we ought not to look only at ourselves or hope for anything. In many ways it is like giving yourself as an act of kindness and care to all those who need it.
